THE GUESTS [LOS INVITADOS]

“Ring, ring, someone’s at the door…”

Belén Maya, who has so often been the guest artist, had it clear from the beginning; this time it was her turn to be the host. From there, the matter was simple if we abide by the dictionary, which tells us that a host is having guests at her table. And that’s what Belén did: she invited some of the artists she admired most to compose together with them unique pieces, in which they continue to deepen their personal calligraphy, their way of understanding and feeling flamenco dance. But, as is known, life does not fit into a dictionary and every celebration hides a centre whose name is absence. If that centre is ignored, the celebration empties us; if it’s touched, it enlightens us. And she has always been in favor of the light.

The guests offers us a performance with some of the most valuable names in flamenco today and shows us those pieces the Flamenco dancer has composed together with her guests. Underneath, like a heartbeat, lies the dancer’s journey toward that centre that is in the depths of her. At each stop, with each call, th e song that is riddle and answer at the same time:

Little well of snow
That was at a spring;
The deeper the well,
The clearer the water ran.

In The guests, Belén is celebrating, it’s impossible not to in such good company, but she’s also hurting. Flamenco talks about life and is life. And in life, celebration and mourning occur; they mix and get confused as happens with the dancing, singing and guitar playing. We, the audience, are ultimately the real guests of
this celebration.
